  • 1 – Low: Generally safe conditions. Natural avalanches are unlikely, and human-triggered avalanches are very unlikely. Even at low danger, steep terrain can produce isolated wind slabs, so stay alert.
  • 2 – Moderate: Heightened conditions in specific terrain. Human-triggered avalanches are possible on steep slopes. This is the most common rating and where many accidents happen because riders become complacent. Be selective about terrain and avoid steep, open slopes with fresh wind deposits.
  • 3 – Considerable: Dangerous conditions. Human-triggered avalanches are likely on many steep slopes. This is where experience and conservative terrain choices become critical.   • 5 – Extreme: Extraordinary conditions. Widespread avalanches are occurring. Do not travel in avalanche terrain. This rating is rare, but when it appears, the backcountry is effectively closed for recreational travel.

Identifying Avalanche Problems

The forecast doesn’t just give you a number—it identifies specific avalanche problems, which tell you the type, location, and likelihood of avalanches. The most common problems include:

  • Storm Slab: Soft, cohesive layers of fresh snow deposited during a recent storm. These are often the easiest to identify and avoid—stay off steep, open slopes that have been loaded by recent snowfall. Storm slabs typically become more stable as the snowpack settles and bonds over a few days.

Some conditions are so dangerous that they override everything else. These are your red flags, and if you observe any of them, you should seriously consider aborting your tour regardless of what the forecast says:

  • Recent avalanche activity: If you see evidence of natural avalanches on similar terrain to what you plan to ride, the snowpack is telling you it’s unstable. Don’t test fate.
  • Shooting cracks: When your weight causes cracks to shoot out from your board or skis across the snow surface, you are standing on an unstable slab. Back off immediately.
  • Whumpfing sounds: A loud “whumpf” as you walk means you’ve collapsed a weak layer beneath you. This is a direct sign of snowpack instability and a strong indicator that avalanches are possible.
